The Tuwhare Residency Programme

The first residency to be developed in the name and home of a Maori writer.

The aim of establishing the Tuwhare Residency Programme is to nurture and develop new literary and creative works by providing emerging and established writers and artists with an inspiring environment to focus on their craft.

The Tuwhare Residency offers a unique experience to be resident in Kaka Point, in the home of one of Aotearoa’s greatest poets and be inspired by the same surroundings, view and rhythm of life that once inspired Hone Tuwhare. Our hope is that our residency programme will inspire the creative work of Aotearoa’s writers and artists, just as Kaka Point inspired the creative work of Hone Tuwhare.

The residencies are made possible with thanks to support from Creative New Zealand and The Sargood Bequest. The Tuwhare Trust is truly grateful for this as it enables us to support Aotearoa’s writers and creatives.

We are offering 3 supported residencies. Each residency offers a stipend, travel and accommodation at the Tuwhare crib at Kaka Point for up to 4 weeks.

The Inaugural Tuwhare Fellows

In October 2022, the Tuwhare Trust completed the restoration of Hone Tuwhare’s crib at Kaka Point. On October 21, 2022, timed to also celebrate Hone Tuwhare’ s 100th Birthday, the crib was officially opened, and the Tuwhare  Residency Programme was launched. Our inaugural Tuwhare Fellows over 2023–2024 were Tame Iti (Ngai Tuhoe, Te Arawa, Waikato) Tracey Tawhiao (Ngai Te Rangi, Whakatohea, Tuwharetoa) and Ati Teepa (Ngai Tuhoe, Kai Tahu).

Here’s looking at You, Sea

The sea excitedly inciteful is outrageously
including itself in amateur theatricals again.

The waves are like
     white fringed layers
     of green carpet, unfolding.

The small focus I have of them
     from my constricted
     viewpoint is impressed
     on my imagining, roll-on mind-film,
     forever!

Their continuity of ebb, of flow,
lugging in sacks full of pipi, kutai,
tuangi, kina, tio & karahu – to mention
just a small line-up of the
     succulent bounties of the sea
that are life-giving – gives me pause
as well as time, for a prayer
     of thanks to you, Tangaroa.

Wind & current, however, are mischievous
     play-mates. When a decision
is made for them to insert
     a speak-easy-spoke into the
sea’s water wheel works then –

O then, drama abounds for sure,
and the window to the sea-ward
side of my crib begins rattle-screeching
an order for me to ‘Come out! Come out, Sloth!
     And witness this!’
     ‘Uh huh’, I say.
